About:

Due to advancement in medical science and awareness towards health, last 100 years saw an increase in longevity. This also saw a rise of population of elderly people. This applies to India also. In India, increased life expectancy contributed to rise in older population also. The percentage of people of 60 years and above has risen from 6.8% in 1991 to 8% percent in 2011. According to trends population of older people in India will be 9.3% by 2016, 10.7% by 2021 and 12.40% by 2026. The geriatric population need special care in relation to physical, social and mental health. The Gerontology and Geriatrics Research Centre, Pt. Ravishankar Shukla University, Raipur (C.G.) is established for this very purpose.

The Gerontology and Geriatrics Research Centre, Pt. Ravishankar Shukla University, Raipur (C.G.) came into existence in the year 2005 and at present Prof. CD Agashe is coordinating the work in this centre.

Objectives:

The growing population of elderly in India needs proper attention so that productivity of elderly people can be increased by taking care of their health issues. In this regard prevalence of various physical and mental health problems along with its management is essential. We aspire to conduct research on these issues so that proper planning and strategy can be planned to improve quality of life for geriatric population.

The centre is working towards achieving following objectives -

·                   To observe the trends and types of health problems among elderly population

·                   To generate database on elderly population residing in central India.

·                   To identify the causes of health problems and other clinical complications among elderly people.

·                   Act as link between public and private sector to maximise the quality of life among elderly population.

·                   To promote inter-disciplinary research for overall wellbeing of elderly population.

Future Plans

·                   Besides taking care of social, mental and physical aspects of ageing it is worthwhile to include engineering as a clinical tool for rehabilitation of elderly people.

·                   Give training so that families can look after the disabled and bed ridden.

·                   Psycho-social gerontological counselling certificate course can be run by the centre.

·                   Sophisticated and user-friendly equipment's can be designed indigenously for the old age people with the help of scientists.
