SOS in Ancient Indian History culture and Archaeology is the youngest department of this University. 

It was established in 2001.

Prof. R. N. Mishra who was also the first Head of Department.Therafter Prof. L. S. Nigam became the head. At Present Dr. Dinesh Nandini Parihar is the Head of Department. It is one of the most important subjects to know our glorious past. Chhattisgarh region has the richest heritage and antiquities. It is the only department in entire Chhattisgarh region. Till now six students have been awarded PhD degree and twenty five students have been awarded M.Phil degree. Our main areas in imparting Education are Regional History, Art History, Ethno Archaeology, Field Archaeology, Art & Architecture, Numismatic, Palaeography and Epigraphy. It offers M.A., M.Phil. and Ph.D. programs.

SoS plans to start new programs like Diploma in Museology and Archaeology and to start departmental museum, photo achieves. The SOS also is working on exploration, excavation & preservation programs in collaboration with state and central department of archaeology (ASI).

During the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of the Pt. Ravishankar Shukla University, Raipur School of Studies in Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology, Pt. Ravishankar Shukla University, Raipur had organized three day (13,14 and 15th January, 2014) national seminar on “Philosophy of Nagarjuna” in collaboration and financial support with Central University of Tibetan Studies, Sarnath and Chhattisgarh Tourism Board, Raipur in the holy presence of Nobel Laureate his holiness Dalai Lama along with warm presence of Dr. Raman Singh Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh.

In this seminar learned scholars of Indian philosophy, Ancient Indian Culture and Buddhism will discuss contribution of Buddhism in general and Acharya Nagarjuna in particular to Indian culture and its relevance to the contemporary world.

The SOS also runs a Post Graduate Diploma in Tourism and Hotel Management, since 2002. As one of the flagship Courses of the University, the Institute has been the focus of academic life and has continued to build on its tradition while meeting new educational challenges.  For so many years the importance of tourism has been underestimated in Chhattisgarh region, this institute, being a pioneer, strives to inculcate tourism awareness through proper education and training. Since it is a very popular and professional course, the passed out students are working with reputed government organisations, especially Chhattisgarh Tourism Board and private sector as well.

The main achievements of both the departments are playing major role in department of culture and archaeology and tourism board through placement and research activities.
