Year of Establishment: 1977
The “Department of Mathematics and Statistics” is started in Pt. Ravishankar Shukla University in the session 1977-1978 for teaching M.Sc.(Statistics) in the University Teaching Department campus. At first, Prof. Hira Lal Agrawal, has joined this department as Professor & Head in Statistics, along with Dr. B.K.Sharma (Mathematics) and Dr. Gauri Shankar (Statistics) as Lecturer in regular posts. Prof. Hira Lal Agrawal had been in this university for very short period and left back to his parent university, that is, University of JAIPUR (Rajasthan). Then, Prof. Hari Ram Singh has joined this department as Professor & Head on 7th November 1979 and he retired from this department on Nov. 2002. This department was initially situated into Science building of this university in a room then shifted to Arts building and then to Life Science with more space up to the July 2000. This department got its own building in the Year 2000.
The Department attracted a very good lot of students right from the beginning from all over India because Raipur is situated in the CENTRAL PROVINCE of INDIA which directly connected by rail with Maharashtra, Gujarat, West Bengal, Bihar, Orissa and Uttar Pradesh. The very first batch had Mr. Ajit Kumar (DIRECTOR, DSG at Hewitt Packard), Ms. Prabha Agrawal (Prof. & Head) and Mr. Dixit, Mr. Dilip Dholakia among others.
The course taught in this department consist of Fundamentals of Statistics, Basic Principle of Probability, Operations Research Techniques, Statistical Inference, Multivariate Analysis, Sampling theory, Statistical Quality Control, Time Series, Reliability Theory and Computer Software & Hardware as a Special paper since 1982.
By and by, the Department grew; more positions were created which were taken up by Dr. Prabha Agrawal (Rohatgi), Dr. S.K. Singh and Dr. Vyas Dubey as regular faculty. Still One post of Professor and one of Assistant Professor is lying vacant.
As soon as Prof. H.R. Singh has joined the department, research activities has been started and focused around the interest of Prof. H.R. Singh and 18 students have been awarded Ph.D. under him. Many research projects have been completed by different faculty of this department during 1988-2012 funded by DST, UGC, CSIR and MPCOST.
Around 1980, India entered in the new era of Digital Desktop Computers, when the government allowed importing such equipment. This changed the environment in which Statisticians operated, to a great extent. This department made all efforts to take advantage of new situation and succeeded to have a Floppy-Disk Drive desk –top computer from Hindustan Computer Limited (HCL), which was a first digital computer in Madhya Pradesh. As soon as digital computer installed in the Department of Statistics, Teacher, Students and Office staff increased their level of skills. Programming and use of computers were introduced progressively in successive revision of syllabi. In the year 1983, Statistics department has started a very new course in Chhattisgarh (Madhya Pradesh) named “Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Programming and Data Structure”, for all students who have graduation in any discipline. The faculty members who taught this course were Prof. H.R.Singh, Dr. Prabha Agrawal and Mr. B.Srinivasu.
After 10 years of successful run of this course has shifted to a new department named” Department of Computer Science” in this University.
Right from the beginning of this department, Department of Statistics has sought to keep the syllabus up to-date as per U.G.C. norms and NET examination. The structure of M.A./ M.Sc. (Statistics) program has changed into Semester system since 1998.
M.Phil./ Ph.D. Program:
An educational institute or organization is of course known by its output of graduates and their quality. Nearly 700 students have earned M.A. / M.Sc. (Statistics) degree from this department. Many have achieved great distinctions in Academics, IT Sectors, Industries and Government.
This department has introduced M.Phil. (Statistics) in 2008 and continued till today. Also, a teaching and application of SPSS software has been introduced with FIELD WORK for the completion of Project Work of M.Sc. (Statistics ) IVth Semester students.
Now, this deparment is runnig a special course for the students of all discipline who are in II & III semester of their P.G. Courses known as “ Choice Based Credit System”, so that they can get awareness about Statistics which is required for their studies.
Department of Statistics has major emphasis on Industrial Statistics & Operations Research specialization apart from project work at P.G. level. At research level, guidance is available in Statistical Quality Control, Reliability Theory, Operations Research, Sampling Theory, Survival Analysis ,Theory of Deterioration. The Department is under the obligation to feed and train manpower required in various disciplines and industrial sector of this state. The dedicated faculty members, actively working in applied field of Statistics, have completed 9 research projects and produced more than two dozen of Ph.D.'s.
